Shopify shipping and checkout statistics (2026)

Last updated 27 October 2026.

Numbers on cart abandonment, shipping costs, delivery speed, international orders, and the limits Shopify and the main carriers put on shipping rates. Every figure links to the page it comes from, and every source was read on 20 October 2026. The first section is our own data, from a test of 241 Shopify stores' checkouts.

Original data: our 2026 store study

In October 2026 we created a cart for one in-stock product, as an anonymous buyer, on 241 public Shopify stores, and read the delivery options offered in up to eight of the countries each store ships to. Full method and limits are in the study.

Sample: well-known example stores from 17 public lists, likely better maintained than average, so these figures probably understate the problem. Data collected 20 to 22 October 2026.

Delivery prices from the same tests are on Shopify shipping prices by country (2026): in our 2026 test of 241 Shopify stores, the cheapest option to a US address had a median of 5.99 USD from US-based stores (n = 80 carts) and 16.50 USD from stores based abroad (n = 30), and 129 of 877 carts with fixed rates (14.7%) included a free option.

Carrier-calculated rate statistics

Carrier-calculated rates are the live prices a carrier account or a shipping app returns at checkout. These are Shopify's documented limits for them.

Rate requests per minute (per shop and app)Time allowed to answer
Under 1,50010 seconds
1,500 to 3,0005 seconds
Over 3,0003 seconds

Source: Shopify developer documentation, DeliveryCarrierService (2026). Shopify says these are upper limits and may change outside its normal API versioning.

Carrier parcel size and weight limits

A cart heavier or larger than a carrier service allows gets no rate from that service. Limits as each carrier publishes them:

Carrier and serviceMaximum weightMaximum size
USPS Ground Advantage70 lb130 in length plus girth
Royal Mail Small Parcel2 kg45 × 35 × 16 cm
Royal Mail Medium Parcel20 kg61 × 46 × 46 cm
Canada Post parcels (Priority, Xpresspost, Expedited, Regular)30 kg3 m length plus girth
Australia Post, within Australia22 kg105 cm long, 0.25 cubic metres

What this means for your checkout

Shipping cost and delivery speed are among the top reasons shoppers leave a checkout, in Baymard's and DHL's surveys alike. The worst case is not a high rate but no rate at all: the buyer sees “Shipping not available” and cannot pay. Several of the limits above lead straight there: a cart over a carrier's weight limit, a carrier or app that does not answer within its time budget, a plan that loses carrier-calculated shipping, a country outside every active market. When live rates fail, what the buyer sees depends on your backup rates; our guide to carrier-calculated rates not showing walks through each case.

The free store check loads your checkout as an anonymous buyer in each country you ship to (up to eight) and shows which ones get no delivery option.

Methodology

The figures credited to ShipRateGuard (2026) come from our own store study, run 20 to 22 October 2026; its method and limits are on the study page. We read every other source on this page on 20 October 2026 and quote figures as their sources publish them, without recalculating or rounding them. The year next to a source is the year of the edition or data we read; for undated documentation pages (Shopify Help Center, Shopify developer documentation, carrier size guides), it is the year we read the current version. Surveys keep their own scope: Baymard's abandonment reasons are US online shoppers, Eurostat's figures are EU residents aged 16 to 74, and DHL's are its global sample of 29 countries. We left out widely repeated figures whose original source we could not open. We will update this page when the sources update.
