“Shipping not available” at Shopify checkout

Your buyer typed a perfectly valid address and Shopify answered with a red box. The message blames the address. It is almost never the address. Here is what it means, and how to find the real cause by looking at who is affected.

Shipping not available
Your order cannot be shipped to the selected address. Review your address to ensure it's correct and try again, or select a different address.

What it actually means

The checkout looked for a delivery option for this cart and this address, and found none. Not a slow one, not an expensive one: zero. Shopify has no way to tell the buyer why, so it suggests the only thing a buyer can change — the address.

The cause is on the store's side, and it is one of a short list. The fastest way to narrow it down is to ask which buyers hit the message.

We check, as a buyer from each country your store ships to, whether the cart gets a delivery option.

The causes, one by one

The product is not for sale in that country

If a product is not available to buyers in a country, the cart gets no delivery option at all, however well shipping is set up. Shopify may even describe it as “already sold out” while you have stock. Rule this out first: it is not a shipping problem, and no shipping setting will fix it.

No zone, or no active market, for the country

Each address must fall in a shipping zone that has at least one rate, and the country must belong to an active market. A country in a zone but outside every market is still not reachable. On stores using market-driven shipping, rates live under Markets → (market) → Shipping instead of in shipping profiles — see what changes.

The product is in the wrong shipping profile

Products in a separate profile — heavy items, fragile items, products added by a dropshipping or print-on-demand app — only get the rates of that profile. If that profile has no zone for the destination, those products, and any cart containing them, cannot ship there.

The stock is at a location that does not ship

Shopify can only ship from an active location with a valid address whose inventory is available to fulfil online orders. A product stocked only at a retail shop or a paused warehouse has nowhere to ship from. Check Settings → Locations.

Weight is wrong — usually a price problem, not a block

Weight tiers rarely block checkout: when no weight-based rate matches the cart and no other rate applies, Shopify uses the next highest weight-based rate so the buyer can still check out. What you get instead is a wrong price. A variant with no weight is treated as weightless, a weight in the wrong unit lands in the wrong tier, and the default package weight adds to every cart — see wrong or high rates. Carrier-calculated rates are stricter: a parcel over the carrier's limits gets no rate.

Price conditions leave a gap — after the discount

Price-based rates are compared with the cart total after discounts. A rate for orders from 50 € does not apply to a 55 € cart with a 10 € code. This one survives every test you run without a discount code, and appears on your best promotion day.

The carrier said no

Carrier-calculated rates come from the carrier or an app, live, for each cart. If the carrier rejects the address or the parcel, or does not answer in time, there are no rates from it. Shopify's backup rates, on by default, cover the case where every carrier or app rate fails; when only one of several fails, its option just disappears. More on carrier-calculated rates.

An app took over

Shipping and fulfilment apps can create their own profiles and move products into them. Rates you edited by hand may no longer apply to those products.

The problem is not in your store at all

Carriers and Shopify have outages too. Shopify posts them on its status page: past incidents there include “UPS shipping rates not available at checkout” and “FedEx shipping rates not available at checkout” (late 2019), each with the same advice — add rates from other carriers, or flat rates, so that customers can complete orders. If every store setting looks right and the failure started suddenly, look there before changing anything.

Check it as a buyer, not as an admin

Every cause above looks fine from the settings screen it lives on. The only reliable test is the buyer's: a cart, an address, and the options that come back. Do it for each country you sell to, and again after any change to markets, shipping or apps — or let ShipRateGuard check it every 6 hours and email you only when a country breaks.
