Shopify checkout diagnosticsLocal pickup or local delivery not showing at checkout
Last updated 1 November 2026.
You switched on pickup in store, or local delivery, and a nearby buyer reaches checkout without it. Or it shows for one product and not another, or it vanishes when they pay with Apple Pay. Both options depend on more than one switch: the location, its stock, a shipping zone, the buyer's address and the payment button. Here is each condition, from Shopify's Help Center, and what merchants ran into in the Community.
Start from what the buyer sees

Pickup in store: why the option does not show
In Shopify's checkout, buyers choose between Ship and Pick up in the Delivery section, then pick a location. Each condition below can remove that choice.
Pickup is not turned on for that location
Pickup is set per location, not once for the store. Shopify's Help Center: “You need to set up pickup in store for each location where customers can pick up their orders.” Go to Settings → Shipping and delivery, open Pickup in store in the Additional delivery methods section, click the location, and check that Let customers pick up orders directly at this location is on in Location status. Save.
The Help Center lists two requirements before any of this works: at least one location that fulfills online orders, and the latest version of checkout. If you are not on it, an upgrade notice shows in Settings → Checkout.
The location does not fulfill online orders
Each location has a setting named Inventory at this location is available to fulfill online orders, in Settings → Locations. It is on by default for new locations. A shop location used only for in-person sales may have had it turned off. Turn it back on for the location where buyers collect.
Not every item is in stock at the pickup location
This is the cause Community replies point to most often. The Help Center says it plainly: “By default, pickup in store is available only when the entire order is in stock at the pickup location.” One product stocked only at your warehouse is enough to remove pickup for the whole cart.
In a 2021 thread, the reply was that all items in the cart “must have available inventory at a location that has local pickup enabled”. In a thread that ran from 2020 to 2023, two merchants traced it to a fee product added to the cart by an app: that product was available only at the default location, so pickup elsewhere disappeared. A 2025 thread about newly added products got the same advice: check that the product is stocked at the pickup location, since zero stock there hides the option.
The fix is stock at that location, or store transfers. In the same pickup settings, you can pick other locations to transfer inventory from when the pickup location is short, with a longer processing time for those orders. You can exclude collections from transfers, but not single products.
“Your order isn't available for pickup. Enter a shipping address”
The Help Center gives one cause for this exact message: there is no shipping zone for the physical location where buyers pick up. In your shipping settings, Not shipping from may show next to that location. Shopify's fix: in Settings → Shipping and delivery, in the shipping zone for your pickup location, click Add rate → New rate, then Done without adding any rates. “The zone itself needs to exist for the pickup location to work properly.”
This is why stores that only offer pickup still need a shipping zone. A merchant in the 2020 thread above quoted their support agent the same way: a shipping zone is needed for buyers “to be eligible for any of your shipping, delivery, or pickup options.”
The buyer is in another country
Buyers only see pickup locations in their own country. If there are none, checkout shows “There are no pickup locations available”, and the buyer can click Change my location.
A cart of pickup-only products
A common setup for click-and-collect items is a separate shipping profile with no zones or rates. In a March 2026 thread on Shopify's developer forum, a merchant with that setup reported that a cart of only those products opens on Shipping, with “Shipping not available for the selected address”, and the buyer has to switch to the Pickup tab by hand. A Shopify staff member replied that Shopify is aware of it and is “working on some improvements to this behaviour”, with no release date. So pickup is not missing here, only not selected by default.
Turning off Physical product on those variants is not a clean way out. Per the Help Center, pickup availability on product pages only shows for products stocked at a pickup location with the Physical product setting on.
Local delivery: why the option does not show
The Help Center sets five conditions. Buyers get local delivery only when all of them are met:
- All physical products in the cart are eligible for delivery from one location.
- That location has the inventory to fulfill the entire order.
- Google can verify the buyer's address. At checkout, buyers can pick a verified address from the suggestions.
- The address is inside the delivery radius and in the same state or province, or inside your postal codes and in the same country.
- The buyer does not choose an accelerated checkout other than Shop Pay in the first step of checkout.
Local delivery is not turned on for that location
Like pickup, local delivery is set per location: Settings → Shipping and delivery, Local delivery in Additional delivery methods, the location, then Deliver orders to customers directly from this location in Location status. Shopify also asks that each delivery location has stock and can fulfill online orders.
The address is outside your delivery zone
Zones are either a distance radius from the location or a list of postal codes, with up to 10 zones per location.
- Radius: at most 160 kilometers or 100 miles. It stops at the state or province line unless you select Include neighboring states or regions, and it never extends into another country, even with that option on.
- Postal codes: a list separated by a comma and a space, up to 3,000 characters.
To cover every code that starts the same way, add an asterisk or a space after the start
(
M5V*). For UK postcodes, matching works on the full postcode area or the full outward code:Ematches E1 1AA but not EH1 1TA, andEH1does not match EH11 1AA.
An address that cannot be verified
The buyer's address must be one Google can verify. With a delivery radius, your own business location must be verified too, and Shopify's locations guide warns that “an unverified address can prevent you from offering local delivery in your store.” Check the location's address in Settings → Locations, and correct it if a postal service or Google formats it differently.
The order is under the minimum order price
Each zone can have a Minimum order price. Below it, the zone does not apply. In the Help Center's own example, three zones all require 20 USD, so an order under 20 USD gets no local delivery at all. When zones overlap, the buyer is charged the lowest applicable delivery price.
The cart cannot come from one location
Buyers cannot have some items shipped and others delivered locally in the same order; the Help Center says they must place two orders. So one item stocked elsewhere removes local delivery from the whole cart, as with pickup.
B2B buyers, and other shipping apps
B2B checkouts do not support local delivery (a B2B draft order can, if you preselect it). And the Help Center warns that third-party shipping apps, meaning apps not made by Shopify, “might conflict with Shopify's local delivery method.”
Apple Pay, Google Pay and other express buttons
For local delivery, the Help Center is explicit: it works with Shop Pay, but not with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay or PayPal. When a buyer chooses one of those in the first step of checkout, local delivery is not offered.
For pickup, the pickup guide says nothing about express buttons, but merchants have reported the same since 2020. In a thread opened in November 2020, orders paid with Apple Pay switched to shipping, and merchants were still reporting it in March 2026. In a March 2024 thread, a reply that promised to pass the feedback to Shopify's developers called it expected behaviour: accelerated checkouts such as Apple Pay and Google Pay “do not work with Local Pickup Orders.”
Shopify's own suggestion, if most of your orders are local delivery or pickup: you can temporarily turn off your accelerated checkouts.
An app hides or replaces the option
Shopify's developer documentation counts local delivery and pickup among the delivery options a delivery customization app can hide, rename or reorder at checkout. If an app of that kind is installed, check its rules first: how to find and test delivery customizations. On Shopify Plus, a custom app can also replace the built-in pickup feature; it then shows under Pickup service in the pickup settings.
When everything looks right
Some threads end without a cause. In the 2022 thread on pickup and in a 2023 thread on local delivery, the option appeared only after the buyer went back a step (“return to information”) or switched to Pickup and back. One suggestion in the 2023 thread was to turn local delivery off for the location, save, turn it on again and save; another merchant reported “no luck”. These are past reports, not a documented behaviour. If the conditions above are all met and the option still does not show, contact Shopify Support with the product, location and test address.
What our store check covers, honestly
The free store check puts one unit of one product in a cart, as an anonymous buyer, with one address per country in a large city (New York, Toronto, London, Paris…), and lists every delivery option the cart gets back, with its price. It does not sort options by type: if Shopify returns a pickup or local delivery option to that cart, it is listed with the others, under the name Shopify gives it.
But do not count on it to test pickup or local delivery. Shopify's Storefront API, which the check uses, lists local pickup and local delivery among its delivery method types, but its documentation does not say when a cart gets them, and we have not confirmed that it does. Our check never chooses a pickup location. Our address falls inside your local delivery area only if one of your zones happens to cover that street. And it does not pay with Apple Pay or Shop Pay, or see your locations, their stock or your settings.
What it does tell you: whether a buyer in each country gets shipping options at all. Monitoring re-checks every 6 hours and emails you when a country loses its delivery options or a known option disappears, including a pickup or local delivery option if one came back in our results.
